Description
Dr. Ron Tankersley graduated from Warwick High School in Newport News, Virginia. After completing his pre-dental education at the College of William and Mary, he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia (now the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University) in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Tankersley's academic awards at the Medical College of Virginia included Sigma Zeta for academic achievement in the basic sciences, Omicron Kappa Upsilon for overall academic achievement, and two annual A.D. Williams Scholarship Awards for highest academic achievement in his class. He is a Diplomate of the America Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and served as an examiner on the Board. He is also certified by the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He has been in private practice in Newport News, Virginia since 1971. As an Adjunct Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, he also maintains a relationship with the Medical College of Virginia. Advocating for the profession and the oral health of the public has been an important part of Dr. Tankersley’s career. He served as President of the Peninsula Dental Society, the Virginia Dental Association, the Virginia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Southeastern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the American Dental Association. He is currently a Regent-at-Large for the American College of Dentists. Professional honors include Fellowship in the Virginia Dental Association, the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is recipient of the Virginia Dental Association's President’s Award for distinguished service, the Pierre Fauchard Academy's State Award of Recognition, the Medical College of Virginia’s Dr. Harry Lyons Outstanding Dental Alumnus Award, and Virginia Commonwealth University’s Alumni Star Award. Dr. Tankersley's wife, Gladys Holland Tankersley, is a Newport News native. She graduated from Warwick High School and the College of William and Mary. Their children, Ken and Christie, and five granddaughters all live locally. Ken is a partner in the practice. Christie is a small-animal veterinarian. Dr. Tankersley spends much of his free time with musical instruments, photography and computers. For recreation, the entire family enjoys outdoor activities.
